Virtual VE Day – 8th May 2020

union jack imageThe Borough Council are planning a programme of activities to celebrate VE Day that you can enjoy without leaving home. The planned celebrations for the village have had to be postponed until VJ Day in August but there are a wealth of things that you can do to celebrate the anniversary of Victory in Europe safely in your own home, on the 8th of May 2020.

Full details will be published in the press, on social media, and on the Stories of Lynn website on Friday 1st May. Plans include 1940’s dance classes, an ARP Warden plane spotting quiz, making table decorations from recycled materials, creating bunting and paper hats, preparing food, and hearing the experiences from someone who remembers the day. There will also be a gallery of archive photos and a talk from True’s Yard.

We are all being encouraged to join the national 3pm toast to the veterans. The whole day will finish with an online disco, leading up to the nation singing ‘We’ll meet again’ at 9pm along with the broadcast by the BBC.

The Borough Mayor Cllr Geoff Hipperson, is asking people to get involved in two early activities. First, invite the Mayor to attend your celebration virtually via Facetime or Whatsapp video, all you need to do is to fill in the online form to request a visit. He is hoping to fit in around 20 visits, including visiting staff and patients at the QE Hospital at 3pm when the whole country will be toasting our heroes past and present.

The second is to vote for one of four 1940’s recipes, so that our 1940’s cook Kathy Hipperson can bake the winning recipe. To vote for your favourite recipe, visit storiesoflynn.co.uk/VEDay75 and make your vote by noon on 1 May 2020. A video of the winning choice being made will be posted on the Stories of Lynn website along with the recipe and other 1940’s recipes so that people can try to replicate a 1940’s tea party if they want to. Look at next week’s Your Local Paper and the Lynn News where there will be templates to copy or colour in, and the flags and bunting can be put in windows and living rooms. Send in photos and the Mayor will pick one entry to be invited to the Mayor’s Parlour for tea and a tour of the Town Hall, when it is safe to do so.

Update Monday 13th April

corona virus imageAnother update for Dersingham residents. As we move towards the end of the first three weeks of lock-down it seems very likely that the next Government announcement will bring more of the same. We are constantly reviewing the situation with the Village Centre but at the moment it is not possible to predict when we will be able to reopen.

A big thank-you to all Dersingham residents, who have been abiding by the government’s “stay at home” guidance. The village seems eerily quiet, which means people are staying at home and staying safe!

There is much more about the Coronavirus situation on the Dersingham Parish Council website, Dersingham.org.uk which has a dedicated page of information and loads of links to useful websites.  Much of the information there has been provided by local County Councillor Stuart Dark. Everything is there from help for businesses, to new bus timetables, to revised bin collections and much more.

Stay safe, stay at home and keep washing those hands. Let’s keep Dersingham fit and healthy!

The week ahead at the Village Centre – 16th – 22nd March
